What is tranexamic acid?

Tranexamic acid prevents or treats bleeding by helping blood clot. It is used in various settings including dental procedures and heavy menstrual bleeding.

Tranexamic acid at home

  • Do not exceed the recommended duration or dose.
  • Swallow tablets whole with or without food.
  • Give missed doses as soon as possible, ensuring at least 6 hours between doses.
  • Store at room temperature.

Possible side effects

  • Tablets: headache, abdominal pain, back or joint pain, nasal congestion, muscle cramps, fatigue
  • Injection: diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, dizziness
  • Serious side effects include stroke, eye problems, seizures, or signs of blood clots
  • Allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in throat, swelling of face or neck)
  • Not all patients experience these effects. Report all symptoms immediately.

Tips for patients and families

  • Discuss all instructions with the doctor or pharmacist.
  • Inform the care team of any history of blood clots, brain bleeding, APL, or hormone-based birth control use.
  • Schedule regular eye exams.
  • Take tablets only during menstrual bleeding for no more than 5 days unless directed.
  • Use caution with activities until the medicine’s effects are known.
  • Inform the care team if sexually active, pregnant, or breastfeeding.
