What is Factor IX complex?
Factor IX complex replenishes clotting factors to manage bleeding disorders. It is supplied as a powder to be mixed with sterile water and given by IV.
Possible side effects
- Allergic reactions (itching, hives, swelling, tightness in throat, trouble breathing)
- Chest pain, trouble breathing, coughing blood
- Fever or chills
- Nausea or mild stomach pain
- Lightheadedness
- Yellowing skin or eyes
- Joint pain
- Severe headache, vision or speech problems, difficulty walking
- Pain, itching, swelling, burning, or a lump at injection site
- Lower leg pain
- Numbness or weakness in limbs or one side of the body
- Symptoms of allergic reaction also include rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in throat, swelling of face or neck
- Not all patients will experience these side effects. Report any symptoms to the care team.
Tips for patients and families
- Discuss all questions with your doctor or pharmacist.
- Store in the refrigerator without freezing; do not use past expiration.
- You may be taught home infusion; ensure you understand instructions before injecting.
- Have another trained person available to help; contact your doctor for missed dose guidance.
- Warm powder and diluent to room temperature before mixing; use within 3 hours of reconstitution.
- Use new needles/syringes for each dose and dispose of sharps safely.
- Ask the care team about proper disposal of leftover medicine and supplies.
